Maa päeva tähistamine sai alguse 1970. aastal USA-s, kus miljonid ameeriklased protestisid tänavatel keskkonna saastamise vastu. Tänapäeval tähistatakse Maa päeva kogu maailmas mitmesuguste ürituste ja ettevõtmistega, mille eesmärgiks on juhtida inimeste tähelepanu keskkonnaprobleemidele (kliima soojenemine, õhusaaste, liigne energia tarbimine, autostumine, agraarühiskond jne).
